LASER BLEACHING
Today, everyone has a motto – “A better look”. That is, looking better in the physical sense. Nice-looking hair, glowing skin and pearly teeth. For your teeth to look well-kept, they should have no stains and a white, shiny appearance. Of course, you need healthy gums too, but that is a different issue.
There are various reasons for your teeth to look darker than usual. Some people have yellow or stained teeth since birth. It used to be destiny for these people, but it is now possible to solve the issue of yellow, or stained teeth. Through many bleaching methods and techniques, your teeth can have a whiter appearance. One of these methods is laser bleaching and we will be discussing it further.

FIRST ISSUE TO CONSIDER: WHO ARE SUITABLE FOR DENTAL BLEACHING PROCEDURES?
1-People with teeth that have gone yellow over time. People who had white teeth and grew up to have yellow ones. No matter how hard they try, their teeth look yellowish due to the dentine layer, the layer that gives your teeth its color, becoming more visible after the enamel layer becomes thinner.
2-There are some antibiotics that children under 12 should not use. These are tetracycline-type antibiotics. They cause yellow, or even brown stains on their tooth. If the stains are not too intense, bleaching gets rid of them.
3- People with discolorations at the inner surfaces of teeth, called fluorosis.
4-People with innately-yellow teeth (just like some people being born with blond hair and some with dark hair.). The color of teeth may vary between people. Especially the teeth of those with a lighter skin color will look yellower.
5-During a cosmetic dental application, when a whiter look is aimed, lower teeth should also be bleached.
6-Teeth that are damaged after a root canal treatment or a trauma bruise and change color, these teeth are also bleached to look white.
7-Teeth get discolored or yellower due to inflammatory diseases that are contracted before the development of teeth is completed. These people also benefit from bleaching.
WHO SHOULD NOT RECEIVE BLEACHING TREATMENTS?
1-People under 18.
2-Pregnant women.
3-People who smoke and consume tea intensely and are unable to cut down on those during their treatment.
4-People who are allergic to the solution used.
5-People with cracks and breakages on their teeth and people the root surfaces of whose teeth are exposed due to receding gums.
6-People with porcelain- or composite-type restorations on their teeth
HOW IS BLEACHING PERFORMED?
Firstly, the person is deemed whether their dental structure is suitable for a bleaching treatment. Those who are suitable are always photographed. The “before” status of the color of their teeth is recorded. For discolorations that are intense and hard to deal with, household bleaching is preferred.
Before laser bleaching applications;
-Brush your teeth with a fluoride-free toothpaste (Before visiting the dentist).
-Your teeth are to be cleaned with pumice (when the bleaching treatment starts)
-Gums and lips are covered in special preservatives.
-Whitening gel-dust is applied on teeth and every region undergoes a 30-minute irradiation. The irradiation period varies between devices and gels.
-The protective gel and the preservative barriers are removed, thus completing the session. Where needed, the patient proceeds with household bleaching methods.
-If the household bleaching method is to be DISCONTINUED, the patient should refrain from consuming foods or beverages that may stain teeth, such as tea or coffee, for 24 hours.
HOW LONG DOES LASER BLEACHING LAST?
It depends. In general, it lasts 2-3 hours. The amount of coffee and tea consumed, and oral care, are really important. If you cut down on coffee and tea and exercise good oral care, this period may be longer for you. If you do the exact opposite, it may get even shorter.
If by-products with whitening agents are used with the approval of the patient’s doctor, the duration will be longer.
FAQs
WILL LASER BLEACHING HARM MY TEETH?
As with all bleaching methods, with the right indication and correct dosing, laser bleaching will not be harmful for your teeth.
EVERY RULE WAS FOLLOWED, YET MY TEETH HURT FOR A DAY FOLLOWING MY BLEACHING. IS THIS NORMAL?
It is quite normal to have a short-lasting period of dental sensitivity following every bleaching method. Anti-sensitivity toothpastes will help you feel better. Do not worry, the sensitivity will go away in 24 hours.
HOW LONG UNTIL I CAN CONSUME STAINING FOODS OR BEVERAGES, LIKE TEA OR COFFEE, AFTER THE PROCEDURE IS COMPLETED?
Bleaching period continues for 24 hours, after the completion of the procedure. During this period, no staining agents should be used.
I HEARD THAT LASER BLEACHING IS BANNED IN THE US. IS THIS CORRECT?
Of course, as a method that has always been popular, laser bleaching has its limitations. Laser bleaching should be done to lighten the color by 7-8 shades. Expecting a color that is any lighter than this is not quite realistic. The ban in the US is due to the unrealistic expectations of the American people about having their teeth whitened by 10-12 shades.
