The Importance Of Gum Treatments Before An Implant Therapy
Implant treatments are the most popular type of treatments used for missing teeth. With their rising popularity as the patient satisfaction rises, implant treatments require pre-treatment procedures before application.
These procedures make implant therapies longer-lasting and more successful.
There is always a reason behind tooth loss. Gum diseases are the most frequent reasons behind such losses. If the causes of gum diseases are not eliminated before an implant therapy, they cause problems near implants in time after their application (IMPLANTITIS).
If there are microorganisms causing the gum disease, this means that the gum disease will be persistent. To deal with this issue (combatting microorganisms), we initially need to remove the microorganisms to prevent them from forming hosts for themselves again.
ASSESSING ORAL FINDINGS BEFORE AN IMPLANT TREATMENT
- ARE BLEEDING GUMS AN ISSUE? Is there bleeding on gums during brushing teeth? In the case of an active periodontal disease, the implant site may be infected as well. Bleeding is the most significant finding of a periodontal disease.
- DOES THE POCKET FORMS AROUND TEETH exceed 3 mms?
- ARE THERE SHAKY TEETH?
- IS THERE AN ACCUMULATION OF PLAQUES OR TARTARS AROUND TEETH?
- ARE GUMS SWOLLEN OR BLEEDING? Even if a single one of these findings is the case, the problem is in question and your dentist should deal with it immediately.
The surface of your tongue is the most preferred spot of microorganisms; but these microorganisms land onto your tongue all the way from the plaques and tartars around your teeth. For this reason, any spot at which the microorganisms could be hosted should be cleaned thoroughly. The areas around your teeth attract microorganisms. These areas should be cleaned through a tartar cleanup procedure and bleaching.
Dentists should inform patients about the reason of their plaque build-up and teach them how to deal with the issue. In other words, dentists shouldEMPHASIZE THE IMPORTANCE AND THE SIGNIFICANCE OF DENTAL CARE.

It should also be remembered that not having saliva leakage into the room in a patient’s mouth to install a dental implant is impossible. Spit contaminates this little room as it hosts thousands of microorganisms. Although we try to have our patients rinse their mouths to create an antiseptic environment in their mouths, in mouths for which severe cases of tartars and plaques are active, the microorganisms start spreading into their mouths and saliva after some time, despite the mouthwashes they use. This is why gum treatments and plaque controls should be done before an implant operation.
THE FACTORS THAT CAUSE RECURRING GUM DISEASES:
- SYSTEMIC DISEASES (Uncontrollable diabetes etc.)
- SMOKING
- MEDICATION
- PATIENT INCLUSION (BAD ORAL HYGIENE). These factors should be assessed so as not to lose patient motivation and control.
